SPECIES: Sminthopsis aitkeni — Kangaroo Island (KI) Dunnart
CLASSIFICATION: Endangered
They are in very, very grave danger. At best, there may now only be about 300 Kangaroo Island Dunnarts left on the Island. Recent catastrophic fires on Kangaroo Island - home to the KI Dunnart - have quite possibly jeopardised the species even further, as much of its habitat has been destroyed, to say the least.
By night: the KI Dunnart will carefully seek food - including spiders, ants, and insects. While at the same time, trying not to become the 'food' of the constant threat of feral cats lurking in the darkness. By day: they retreat to safe places in the mallee and woodland areas that the KI Dunnart likes to call home.
FAME is committed to do what it can to save the KI Dunnart from extinction. Partnering with Kangaroo Island Land for Wildlife, this project will help save the K Dunnart from extinction by controlling feral cats, establishing a refuge behind predator-proof fencing and surveying and monitoring of the populations.
Now, more than ever, we support this important project because someone needs to stand up for the endangered native animals facing such a tough time in the midst of recent bushfire devastation. It's what we strive to do at FAME.
