SPECIES: Casuarius casuarius johnsonii — Southern Cassowary
CLASSIFICATION: Endangered
Cassowaries are the third largest bird in the world, but you are nowadays hard-pressed to spot one in the wild. There are now only about 4,500 of these fascinating, prehistoric birds left in the Wet Tropics in Far North Queensland, largely due to the enormous and devastating loss of lowland tropical rainforest - important Cassowary habitat. In partnership with Reforest Now, FAME is proud to be supporting this inspiring replanting project. To make a donation or for more information, visit the project page.
