In the Barrington Tops in NSW, our long-standing partnership with Aussie Ark continues to create important moments for the future of the Tasmanian Devil.
For the second year in a row, devil joeys have been found in pouch in the wild on mainland Australia, marking an unprecedented success for this iconic species.
The Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) is the world’s largest surviving marsupial carnivore and was once common on the mainland of Australia, but until 18 months ago was found only in Tasmania.
In 2020, FAME's partners Aussie Ark successfully released captive-bred devils (free of the fatal Devil Facial Tumour Disease which is prevalent in Tasmania) into a wild-like, free-roaming sanctuary in the Barrington Tops.
This latest discovery of joeys means 2022 is the second year in a row where joeys have been bred in the wild of mainland Australia, marking an unprecedented success for this iconic species.
The team on the ground will continue with pouch checks over the coming weeks, and are expecting more than 19 joeys in total. In around six months, we hope to see juvenile devils out and about!
