SPECIES: Acanthocladium dockeri — Spiny Daisy
CLASSIFICATION: Critically endangered
Critically endangered and now down to the last few roadside populations and one very lucky translocated population, the Spiny Daisy – or Spiny Everlasting – is only found in the mid-north in South Australia. Belonging to the daisy family, the Spiny Daisy is a short rigid shrub growing spine-tipped branches. It’s severely under threat from a myriad and often compounding list of threats including habitat fragmentation, population isolation, invasion by weeds and road/farm maintenance.
At FAME, we’re passionate about saving our native smaller, lesser-known species that without intervention would otherwise be left to face extinction. Each and every one of our native Australian species contribute to the rich biodiversity on the continent. To lose just one of these species to extinction disrupts the balance of the ecosystem.
Working with landholders, volunteer and regional partners, the project aims to undertake collaborative searches, workshops and translocations leading to new and increased population numbers whilst maintaining genetic diversity.
