SPECIES: Acacia cochlocarpa subsp. cochlocarpa — Spiral-fruited Wattle
CLASSIFICATION: Endangered
The array of wattle found all over Australia is beginning to come to life as we edge closer to the beginning of spring. Today, we profile the Spiral-fruited Wattle, an endangered species found in Western Australia. This wattle forms large, dense mats as it grows, with sickle-shaped leaves, and it produces masses of golden yellow cylinder-shaped flowerheads. Just gorgeous. Spiral-fruited Wattle is in decline; two populations currently known to exist. To its detriment, it is often found alongside roads and so suffers due to roadside maintenance as plants grow precariously closeby. Invasive weeds are also playing their part in the decline of this beautiful wattle species.
