SPECIES: Senecio megaglossus — Superb Groundsel
CLASSIFICATION: Vulnerable
This one is quite the vibrant, superb, native shrub. The Superb Groundsel is long-lived, with bright yellow flower heads that grows up to 1m high. Unfortunate for the species, it’s now confined to the northern Mt Lofty Ranges and the southern Flinders Ranges in South Australia. The Superb Groundsel is mostly confined to rocky creek beds, gorges and valley slopes and is under threat from the isolated location of known populations, competition from weeds and grazing by goats and stock. Quite superb.
At FAME, we’re passionate about saving our native smaller, lesser-known species that without intervention would otherwise be left to face extinction. Each and every one of our native Australian species contribute to the rich biodiversity on the continent. To lose just one of these species to extinction disrupts the balance of the ecosystem.
Working with landholders, volunteer and regional partners, the project aims to undertake collaborative searches, workshops and translocations leading to new and increased population numbers whilst maintaining genetic diversity.
